Sagaponack was first settled around 1653, and Josiah Stanborough is named as its first settler in 1656. The name comes from the Shinnecock word for “land of the big ground nuts,” not from potatoes, though potatoes were the main crop for generations and many large estates now stand on old potato fields. The village incorporated on September 2, 2005, after a failed attempt by Dunehampton to incorporate, which would have cut Sagaponack off from its ocean beaches.
